Hi Ya’ll 👋
If you’re ambitious than you have goals. That is a good thing. If you don’t know where you are going you will never get there. For me personally I find it so frustrating to be trying to get somewhere, whether it be losing weight, hitting my fitness goals, building my direct sales business, or any other goal that I have personally for myself, but not clearly have in mind the target, the finish line.
Hitting your goals isn’t difficult. It’s simple but unfortunately not always easy. But in this post today I’ll break down, above all else, what it takes to hit your goals every single time. It all comes down to two words. And I promise you if you can get a handle on these two concepts and follow through on them the world will be yours. You can have whatever you are willing to work for!
The words are Commitment and Planning. I know, I know, not very pretty words but their application leads to amazing results.
The Rule of 3rds
One thing I needed to learn and accept before this all made sense to me was the rule of 3rds. Have you ever heard of it?
For me personally I wish I could say this was not the rule. However being in business for many years and tracking business activities over the years has taught me that the rule of 3rds is real: If you look at a large enough sample size, you will see the 3rds rule in affect too.
For example, if I wanted to make 1-2 sales of my product or opportunity. On average I would need to demo the product to 3 people. To have the opportunity to demo those 3 people I would need to pitch the idea to as many as 10 people. And to meet those 10 people I would need to build a relationship with 30 people. And lastly, to do that I will probably need to attempt to engage with 90 people or more.
Here’s the breakdown
To make 1-2 sales of your product or opportunity:
- 90 conversations started with people
- 30 people aware of your product/opportunity which leads to exchanging contact information (save them as a Contact in Namelist and create a Task in Namelist to follow up with them within 48 hours)
- 10 people interested enough to set a meeting with you (create a Process for that contact in Namelist to track their progress as they move through the steps of your sales/opportunity pipeline)
- 3-5 people qualified to purchase and/or join your opportunity
- 1-2 people will actually purchase and/or join your opportunity
These numbers are true for me and they are probably true for you also. If that seems like a lot of work that’s because it is! This is not a blog for the lazy, but for the ambitious professional, such as yourself.
The rule of 3rds is a life changing concept to being with. But in this case it is just the precursor to…
Planning
It is important to know what you want before you go out to get it. What is your goal? Here is how we plan:
Set aside the time needed and sit at a desk or table with no distractions and break down the work needed for you to reach your goals.
Total Time: 1 hour
I ask myself: Where do I want to be in X amount of days/week/months
Lets say for this example I want to register 10 new qualified people into our direct sales opportunity within 6 months. I would need to…
Break down my goal into daily/weekly/monthly habits
Using the rule of 3rds described above.
Register 10 new accounts within 6 months
= 1-2 new accounts per month
= Book 10 meet and greets per month
= Make 30 people aware of the opportunity per month
= Start 90 conversations started with people per month
= Start 10 conversations, make 3 people aware, make 1 new contacts per DAY
Determine the daily habit required. This step is crucial!
In step 2 I determined that I needed to start 90 conversations in 1 month in order to register 1-2 new people into my opportunity that month. However I can’t live one month at a time I can only live 1 day at a time. So I need to break down my monthly activity into a daily activity. With a daily goal I can come home every night after hitting my goal knowing that as long as I stick to the plan I will hit my goal!
Set your start date
As soon as I’ve broken down what I would need to do to reach my goal I set the date when I will start and then apply…
Commitment
Mostly we hear about discipline to reach our goals. And it is true discipline is required. However discipline is a byproduct, a symptom for the root cause of commitment. A commitment is something that you will ABSOLUTELY do NO MATTER WHAT. And if what you committed to is not done, then it was not a commitment, it was a hope.
I don’t mean to be mean, this is just truth. A commitment is a commitment is a commitment. My follow through on my commitment is what determines if it was really a commitment or just a hope that I would accomplish something.
It is my firm belief that when I commit to my daily goal and I refuse to let it go, to not go home until it is done for the day, the world WILL BEND to meet my needs. Grace and miracles will happen when I refuse to be denied. This is true success: following through on your commitments and refusing to be denied.
